Dialogue · Capital & energy

What must Africa build to turn potential into prosperity?

What institutions, investments and capabilities turn resources into lasting human opportunity?

Capital and energy influence what economies can produce and what people can do. This conversation examines the rules, trust, leadership and long-term investment needed to translate those resources into productive capability.

Three ideas explored

1. Capital is also something we build.

Amos describes capital formation through production and trusted market institutions. His account of helping establish a regulator and an exchange shifts attention from finding money to building the architecture through which investment can happen.

2. Judge transition by what people can do.

Tedd connects energy to hospitals, livelihoods, enterprise and everyday participation. His examples ask who benefits from new infrastructure, who carries its costs and what makes a transition meaningful in its local context.

3. Long horizons require dependable foundations.

The conversation connects investment to governance, trust and confidence in the future. It also preserves a tension: infrastructure can generate new opportunity, while deliberate rules help determine how its benefits are shared.

What this means for your leadership

Take the question into your own work.

1. What must exist for resources under your influence to create lasting value?

2. Whose experience would reveal whether an investment is succeeding?

3. Which governance or capability gap needs attention before more money is committed?
